— Jeena Cho

Jeena Cho is a partner at JC Law Group PC, a bankruptcy law firm in San Francisco, CA. In addition to her law practice, she teaches mindfulness and meditation to lawyers. She regularly speaks and writes about wellness, self-care and mindfulness. She also works with lawyers and law firms on stress management, work-life balance, career transition, increasing productivity and overall wellness.

She blogs at her law firm blog, and at The Anxious Lawyer,, which is also the title of her soon-to-be-released book published by the ABA. She also writes for Lawyerist and other legal sites on the net, and she offers courses on mindfulness practice for lawyers.

But we're here to talk about podcasting. Jeena's's podcast is “The Reslient Lawyer”, which she co-hosts with Birmingham Alabama based attorney Keith Lee.

Nicole Abboud

“It's such a great platform to speak your mind and connect with people.”

— Nicole Abboud, Gen Why Lawyer

My guest for this episode is Nicole Aboud, an attorney practicing Fashion Law in Los Angeles. She works with fashion designers and companies to set up their business entities and protect their brands. Nicole graduated from Southwestern Law School in 2011. She remains heavily involved in her law school’s young alumni organization, the Arab American Lawyers Association of Southern California, and the American Bar Association.

In her downtime, Nicole trains for half marathons, volunteers at legal clinics and other community organizations, and hangs out at her local public library.

But we're here to talk about podcasting. When she’s not lawyering, you can find Nicole chatting with awesome millennial attorneys on her podcast, The Gen Why Lawyer Podcast. Nicole’s guests range from attorneys who are finding great success in their legal careers to young attorneys who have decided to pursue alternative non-legal careers to find happiness. Through her podcast, Nicole hopes to inspire professionals to shake off their fear of being unconventional and embrace their unique voice.

Law Podcasting Episode 22 – Ben Snitkoff of Modern Renaissance Legal and Technically Speaking

Ben Snitkoff

Ben Snitkoff,  Modern Renaissance Legal

Ben Snitkoff is a former Big Law attorney who decided to take his experience and create a law practice of his own. He started Modern Renaissance Legal to provide the legal assistance that entrepreneurs, artists, and start-ups need, but often cannot afford.

Ben was a co-host of a podcast entitled “Technically Legal” from 2009 through 2011.  He and his co-hosts had been blogging in the tech-law space for a few years when they started the podcast,  and enjoyed a strong dynamic, and a loyal audience.  But when Ben accepted a job at a big law firm, he was asked not to blog or podcast without the firm's editorial approval.  So the team decided to disband.

I talked with Ben about that decision, and about whether he'll resume podcasting in the future, now that he's in solo practice.

Listen in for Ben's insights.

Law Podcasting Episode 21 Marc Diaz of The Lawyer Straight Talk Podcast

Marc Diaz

…[podcasting is] an easy way to generate a ton of content.

— Marc Diaz, Lawyer Straight Talk

My guest for episode 21 is Marc Diaz, a Real Estate practitioner in the Memphis Tennessee area with a firm called CLOSETRAK. They work mostly in the residential transactional space, and represent real estate investors around the southeastern United States. Marc has always been interested in entrepreneurship, and serves as an adjunct professor in entrepreneurship at the University of Memphis and Entrepreneur in Residence at the Fedex Institute of Technology. Lately, he’s been giving some of his attention to the business of law, and he describes his podcast LAWYER STRAIGHT TALK as a first foray into experimenting with and testing some business models in the law.

His current projects are his podcast and the Da Vinci Golf Approach.

I enjoyed chatting with Marc, and learning his philosophy, as well as his plans to change the format of his show to a more “Serial” style narrative approach to covering a recent Memphis area murder trial.  It should be very interesting to watch.

Marc's advice for new law podcasters:  “Don't get caught up in your launch with trying too hard to get into iTunes' New & Notworthy section.  Just get the show out there”

Marc also reminds us that podcast content is great (and easy) to repurpose as other kinds of content.  Transcribe interviews, and create blog posts, ebooks, etc.  Very effective use of leverage.

“Just go out there and do it.”

(advice for lawyers considering starting a podcast)

— Joe Patrice, Above The Law / Thinking Like A Lawyer

Joe Patrice  has a degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Oregon (My Alma Mater) and  J.D. from the NYU School of Law.  Starting in 2001, he worked as a litigator , representing a variety of individuals, institutions, and foreign sovereigns in criminal and civil matters. Joe left legal practice in 2012 to pursue writing, contributing to numerous publications, including Above The Law, before joining its full-time staff in 2013

Joe told me his podcasting history, including his early offering, a political news oriented blog and show entitled “Recess Appointment

After Joining Above The Law in 2013, Joe began pitching podcast ideas, and after a few false-starts, the organization recently began “Thinking Like A Lawyer”  in which he and co-host Elie Mystal are joined by a guest lawyer to discuss legal issues ranging from the practical to the absurd.

Find the podcast on the Legal Talk Network, and in the iTunes store

Joe is a proponent of podcasting as a medium, and as a tool for lawyers marketing their firms. His advice?  “Just go out there and do it,” he says.   His point being, that if you don't just get started, you'll never get anywhere.

Law Podcasting Episode 19 – Lawyerist’s Sam Glover

Sam Glover

“I don't think of it as an interview, as much as a conversation.”

— Sam Glover, Lawyerist.

Sam Glover is one of the founders of Lawyerist, an online, media rich publication by and for lawyers, which covers all things related to the law, and the the legal profession.  A few months ago, Sam and his partner, Aaron Street decided to launch The Lawyerist Podcast, which features their commentary and discussion, as well as interviews with thought leaders from the legal community.

I spoke with Sam about Lawyerist's beginnings, and about what drove the decision to launch a podcast, some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of creating the show, and the philosophy behind what Lawyerist does.

What I found most interesting was the objective to build a community of solo and small firm lawyers, and how the podcast serves that mission by allowing listeners to get to know the hosts better.

Law Podcasting Episode 17 – Jacob Sapochnick of the Enchanting Lawyer Podcast

Jacob Sapochnik

“By doing the podcast, I've been able to become much more creative in my legal practice.”

— Jacob Sapochnick,The Enchanting Lawyer

Jacob Sapochnick is a San Diego, California area  lawyer who handles Immigration and international law matters.

Originally from Israel, Jacob moved to the US to pursue an LLM in International and Comparative Law.  He started practicing with a Mid-sized firm, worked hard, and soon realized that Solo Practice was the way for him… He started with only a very rudimentary plan, and needed to make things happen fast.  And he did it.  in just 8 years he’s grown his practice to Seven Lawyers and seven support staff, mostly using innovative social media strategies.  He has the largest Facebook community for lawyers with 88,000 followers  and growing.

He publishes two legal blogs , a youtube channel, and a small publishing arm to support the firm’s media strategies.
Jacob takes a strongly systems-oriented approach to running his practice, and to the marketing of the business.  That includes identifying and contacting guests, preparing for interview, and the production, post-production and publishing processes, much of which he has outsourced.

Law Podcasting Episode 16- Lee Rosen of “How to Stay Happily Married”

Pick One [marketing technology, tool or strategy] and go deep with it.

— Lee Rosen

Lee Rosen is the Founder of the Rosen Law Firm, a North Carolina family law firm. He is tremendously active in Bar Associations and committees, and serves on the editorial board of Family Advocate (the largest family law publication int he US, as well as a legal advisor to the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.
Lee enjoys Writing articles, lecturing to civic groups on the subject of “How to Stay Happily Married”, giving CLE courses as well as flying, scuba diving, canoeing and stewed collard greens (which he considers the “greatest food ever invented”. He’s also an avid traveler, and enjoys going places and doing activities that really get the adrenaline flowing.

Lee has recorded hundreds of episodes for StayHappilyMarried.com, NC Divorce Talk Radio and Divorce Discourse. but tells me he’s only recording sporadically….
Nevertheless, he’s a master at creating excellent content on a consistent basis… Largely for his blog at DivorceDiscourse.com This is required reading for anybody who’s starting, running or growing a law firm…

Highlights from our conversation:

When Lee and his team decided to switch their Divorce Talk Radio from a live, call-in podcast, to a live webinar format, they saw a fivefold growth in their audience.  Lee attributes that to the name “podcast”, which until very recently, the public just didn't understand.  They knew what a webinar is, but a podcast?  What's that?
Lee is a strong advocate of outsourcing anything that can be outsourced.  He described the process his firm uses for everything:

  1. Document the system for creating, doing, the thing in question;
  2. Outsource the process to Americans to fine-tune, and tweak the process; and then,
  3. Outsource the processes to overseas workers to save money, etc.

The value  and effectiveness of content marketing stems, Lee told me, from building relationships and trust.  With guests, as well as with the audience.

According to Lee, his highest Return-on-Investment has been from networking, and hosting a podcast has been a great way to meet, connect and establish rapport with professionals in related fields. (Mental Health professionals as guests on Divorce Talk Radio, for example)

The biggest source of new clients for the Rosen Firm is its Web site which receives over 150,000 visitors per month.  It should be noted that this is a VERY comprehensive, and prolific website, built over years.  Lee explains that the ongoing work on the site is continuous, as the firm repurposes, revises, updates, and reformats the site content.

Another favorite quote:  “figure out your own story… then you've got to figure out your client's story. Figure out their problem better than they can say it themselves, because the minute they hear it from you,  they realize you “get it”… you understand them… and you must have the solution.”
